Don't Let Your Boiler Go Out On You This Winter!

Oh my goodness, I can't believe that winter is almost here! Today was a very cold, drizzly, rainy day and it got me thinking about the cold months that are right around the corner.

How do you heat your house? We have a heat pump, but we have to supplement with an electric heater because our old house is mega-drafty! However, I know a lot of people use boilers to heat their home instead of a regular furnace.

I have heard some huge horror stories from friends and neighbors about the bad things that can happen if you have a boiler breakdown in the middle of winter. I don't know about you guys, but I am a "prevention" kind of gal. I like to take care of things before they go wrong, so I don't have to worry about them going wrong at the most inopportune time. (We know things ALWAYS go wrong at the most inopportune time!).

So, how can you see into the future and figure out when is a good time to replace your boiler BEFORE it breaks? I reached out to Iceberg's One Hour, a boiler installation company in Monroe, MI for some tips, and they had some really great advice to offer!

  • You might want to think about boiler replacement if your boiler is between 10-20 years old ( and of course, definitely if it is older than that!)
  • You might want to think about boiler replacement if your utility bills are suddenly very high, much higher than normal.
  • You might want to think about boiler replacement if your home is not as warm as you think it should be.
  • You might want to think about boiler replacement if your boiler does not have an induced draft fan.
  • You might want to think about boiler replacement if your boiler has no vent dampers.
  • You might want to think about boiler replacement if your boiler did not come with an electronic ignition switch.
These are just a few of the most common reasons that people choose to replace their boilers, but there are other reasons too. If you have questions about the likelihood that your boiler will need replacing soon, make sure to talk to your local heating and air professional. We all know that the cold winter months are coming soon, and no one wants to be caught with no heat! Remember, it's always better to be safe than sorry!
